About Me
Hey, stranger. Welcome to my corner of the internet. My name is Jessica, and I am currently in the midst of this adventure called life. So, glad that we’ve crossed paths!
I’m a passionate person with varied interests that tend to cluster around food, health & wellness, travel, & culture (just like every other person on the internet today). I also enjoy writing and feel incredibly humbled when people care enough to read my thoughts, so thank you for being here and stepping into my world for a moment or two.
At this point in the conversation, people usually ask, “So, what do you do?” I’m not a big fan of this question, and of late, I’ve come to the conclusion that the most accurate answer is “A person in the world doing things.”
If you must know, I’m currently working on becoming a professional foodie. After taking a bit of nutrition coursework and flirting with the idea of culinary school, I found my food home in the Gastronomy and Food Studies program at Boston University. I get to spend many hours each week trying to understand why people eat what they eat, and I love it. If given a chance, I’ll talk your ear off about how migration patterns impact our food choices. Or the connection between food and identity. Or the historical and cultural significance of a random ingredient. The list of fascinating topics goes on and on… I’m not sure where this coursework will lead, but I’m leaning toward food media and writing.
I’ve done lots of other things too.
Once upon a time, way back in the last century, I was an actress in a well-known American television series. Perhaps there will be more to come on that chapter in the near future.
Flash forward a few decades, and I landed what I thought was my dream job at one of the largest advertising agencies in the world. (That came shortly after graduating from NYU with a degree in Media Culture & Communications during the last global economic crisis.) Things looked good on paper and social media, but deep down; I knew I was living a double life. For a girl who had danced since she could walk and would choose the gym over happy hour any day of the week, the corporate world felt like a poor fit. So I left. I left to dance on stages around New York City and sweat my butt off, hand-making soap for my own natural bath and body product line. Jump forward a few more years, and I was still sweating my butt off, but this time pouring my heart into teaching yoga to some pretty amazing and passionate students who continue to inspire me today. Prior to returning to academia, I was the head boss-lady and chief problem solver for my family’s real estate company.
So far, this life has taken me to many places across the globe and given me countless opportunities to learn from smart and motivating people. I’m grateful for these experiences and hope I can share something positive from my life with those around me. I don’t know what’s next for me on this journey, but I hope it’s more of the same.
Anyway, I guess, to make a long existential story short, I’m still not quite sure how to answer the question, “What do you do?”
I’ll just stick with, “Things.”
